WE play Somerset in our last LV= County Championship Division One game for over a month this week and it would be good to get a win to sign off before the one-day cricket takes over.
Somerset are a pretty strong outfit, who have been missing a few players so far this season, but they are gradually starting to return to the side now. Hopefully, we can do a job on them.
The four-day season so far has been pretty frustrating for us, especially because the weather has affected so many matches.
We have been in some good positions in games, but not forced home our advantage, while we have also been knocked over for some low totals.
There are plent of positives for us to take out of the start to the season, though.
We have picked up quite a few draw points along the way and plenty of bowling bonus points, but not so many batting points.
We have clearly managed a lot more points than we had at this stage last season though.
Obviously, there will be a change in our training now with more of a focus on white ball cricket. We had a week off from cricket last week, which gave us plenty of opportunity to work hard on our one-day skills and we did some really good scenario training.
Mike Klinger has left us now and he was a great bloke to have around the dressing room.
The batting conditions were tough early in the season, so he didn’t quite score the runs he would have liked, but it has been the most difficult start to a season that I’ve ever experienced.
Still, I thought he applied himself well and it would be good to see him back here sometime in the future.
Phil Hughes has joined us now to replace Mike and he will be a slightly different type of player — he is a lot more aggressive and it will be good to have a left-hander at the top-of-the-order with me.
Phil will have a point to prove after slipping out of the Australian Test team and hopefully we will reap the benefits of that as has been the case for us in the past, with Zaheer Khan being the most obvious example.
With the Australian ‘A’ team touring England this summer, there are bound to be a few Aussie selectors around, so there should be people watching Phil and he will be keen to do well.
My elbow is all good after having had a cortisone injection in it last week and I am fine to play — I just needed a couple of days doing not a lot to rest it.
