WORCESTER City might have lost to Droylsden but we still have every chance of making the play-offs.
If ever there was a good time to have a bad day, it was last Saturday because results were kind to us and nothing has really changed in the chase for the top five.
If you had tried to forecast some of the results last weekend I doubt many people would have got them right.
Yet, when the season kicked off in August, if you had said that we would be two points off the play-offs with eight games to go, everybody connected with the club would have taken that.
That’s where we are and hopefully we can extend our season for those extra three games in May.
We were disappointed for the players after the Droylsden defeat because they set high standards and have put in some fine performances and it was a bit frustrating we couldn’t continue that.
Having beaten Gainsborough Trinity the previous Monday in a match played at a frenetic pace, we looked very tired on Saturday.
But Gainsborough clearly felt the affects of it as well because they lost at Vauxhall Motors at the weekend.
Although it was disappointing in the immediate aftermath against Droylsden, it wasn’t long before we started looking at the positives.
We know we have got to do better but we played extremely well in the seven-game unbeaten run and in a couple of matches we lost before that.
Every team in the world will lose games for whatever reason, nobody is going to be invincible — that’s probably why football is so addictive.
How can 11 players be outstanding in one match and then the majority fail to perform in the next?
I don’t think there’s an answer to that question, it goes that way sometimes and things don’t work out for you.
However, it is superb that we are coming towards the end of March and have still got our season alive on two fronts.
We are still in the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup, with the semi-final against Stourbridge to come next month, and the league campaign is wide open. That’s brilliant and it’s something new for the club.
I am proud of what we have achieved up to this stage of the season and the longer we can keep that going the better.
Unfortunately, we will be without captain Kevin O’Connor for next Tuesday’s game at Boston United and the following Saturday at Harrogate Town through suspension.
There’s no hiding from the fact his absence will be a major blow for us and it’s not a great time to be without him.
Coupled with Tom Thorley struggling with a hamstring injury, that’s a problem for us in midfield but we just have to get on with it.
We always said we would need every player in our squad during the run-in and that has proved to be the case.
