I THINK everyone at Worcester City will be glad to see the back of January.
We played six games last month and only picked up two points, against Histon on Monday and at Workington last Saturday.
It’s no good trying to hide from it, January has been our worst month of the Blue Square Bet North campaign so far.
The previous four and-a-half months have been good for us, pushing the team towards the play-offs, but we have had a poor month and we know that.
It often happens — some teams have a terrible start and others struggle at the end when under pressure for points to get promoted or avoid relegation.
We have had ours smack in the middle of the season so it would be nice to start afresh in February.
First up, it’s Gainsborough Trinity at home on Saturday and then we have league games at Boston United and Solihull Moors as well as Blyth Spartans at St George’s Lane.
We are yet to play either Gainsborough or Boston this season but both teams would have expected to be challenging for the play-offs before the season started so they will be tough games for us.
There is also the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup semi-final at Stourbridge next Tuesday and we will be taking that game seriously, although it’s also an opportunity to give game-time to players who have been on the bench.
Hopefully, the injuries will also improve for us because, at the moment, centre-halves Stuart Whitehead, Jacob Rowe and Lee Ayres are all doubtful for Saturday.
But it’s not something that’s new to us because we have had injuries already this season and last year was terrible for us in that respect.
Meanwhile, I would like to publicly thank the people who helped fund last weekend’s overnight stay for the match at Workington.
One supporter made a substantial contribution towards the costs and, although he wants to remain anonymous, myself and the players know who he is. It was a fabulous gesture and we really appreciate it.
The rest of the costs were funded by the vice-presidents and we are also grateful for their support.
There are many good people associated with Worcester City and that was further demonstrated after the game on Monday.
It was a freezing night but some fans stayed behind to help put the frost covers on the pitch and that was greatly appreciated. These things are not always recognised publicly but they do not go unnoticed within the club.
I was also very encouraged by the size of the crowd for the Histon match and credit must go to the board for being brave enough to give the reduced admission prices a try.
It also gave something back to the fans for their wonderful support for the club.
