THE one thing we have been looking to do this season at Worcester City is make ourselves more resilient away from home.
When on the road, we have to dig in and keep the opposition out for as long as we can because I firmly believe that, the longer a game goes on, our fitness levels increase the chances of winning.
If we can improve on that then there is no reason why we can’t have a very good season.
Improving our away form is something we have to look to do on Saturday when we go to Bishop’s Stortford.
The Hertfordshire club may sit third-from-bottom in Blue Square Bet North but when they came to St George’s Lane in late September I was very impressed with them.
We were 2-0 up and they came back into the match well but we held on for a 2-1 win.
They have some good, young players who have plenty of energy and can cause us problems so it will be a tough game.
But we go there after a fine 3-0 win over Altrincham at home on Saturday.
That result came on the back of a disappointing defeat at Droylsden so to have the response we did was pleasing.
Whenever we have had a result like the 4-1 loss at Droylsden, the players have shown they are capable of doing the same thing to other teams.
To keep a clean sheet against one of the division’s leading scorers — Altrincham never really caused us any problems — was another pleasing aspect of the game last weekend.
When I look at the squad assembled here, I know we have strength in depth.
Players like Danny Carey-Bertram have really stood out for me this year.
The former Hereford striker has hardly missed a training session.
Danny works incredibly hard and has bided his time for an opportunity.
He has an attitude which is superb — he doesn’t moan when not selected but says to himself that he’ll work even harder.
But Danny doesn’t just say it. He goes out there and does it — he is an excellent person to have in the squad.
That is just singling out one person but there is fierce competition for places this season and a super attitude.
The squad has also clicked well and there is a good work ethic throughout the group.
There, of course, have been times where we have been a little naive and made mistakes, but one thing I cannot criticise the squad for is giving their all.
It was really pleasing when we came off the pitch last Saturday, from my assistant manager Matt Gardiner to all of the players, to see the adulation they quite rightly received.
