IT may be early days but it is nice to see Worcester City sitting fifth in Blue Square Bet North after the first month of the season.
We would rather be there than in the bottom five, that’s for certain, but there’s a hell of a long way to go and the table won’t start to settle down until around the end of September.
But we have been touted as favourites for relegation so I will use that as motivation to try and prove a few people wrong.
I am pleased with the first six games and how we have started but we are mindful that it is extremely early.
We started last season very strongly but then injuries took their toll and we didn’t have the strength in the squad and faded away.
This year, although injuries are already biting with Simon Brown, Danny Edwards and Marc McGregor out, it’s not got to the stage where we are struggling for players.
Consistently, we have been quite a difficult side to beat and the thing that’s been evident for me is we have finished every game stronger than our opponents.
That was demonstrated by the late goals we scored against Halifax, Eastwood and Nuneaton.
There’s a spirit and belief that we can go right to the last second of the game and that’s a good quality and pleasing.
I am still mystified as to how we didn’t pick up at least a point in the opening game at Hyde.
Sometimes, though, you do not get what you deserve in football and the most important thing after that match was the response.
If somebody had said to me after that game we would be unbeaten in the next five, I would have taken that.
Hyde have gone on to win all their matches but I would be surprised if they keep that going.
They are going to have a bad run as will every other team in the league.
It’s unusual for a side to go through a season without a little wobble so the table is irrelevant at the moment as much as it’s nice to be in the play-off positions.
That said, one or two clubs who thought they would be challenging have had a bit of a shock.
Saturday sees us host Corby Town at St George’s Lane and it would be good to see another large crowd.
It was said Nuneaton would bring a lot of fans on Monday but that didn’t map out — they only brought 112 and there were over 800 of our own supporters.
There was also an encouraging crowd against Vauxhall Motors considering it was a Monday night during the school holidays.
The fans are seeing something in the team as well as that fighting spirit.
Hopefully, you will continue to support us because that will increase our chances of being successful over the months ahead.
