EVESHAM Golf Club’s men played for the Bill Onion Trophy.
The competition was run in parallel with the August monthly medal, which was played in two divisions.
Division One, for the lower handicap players, was won by a resurgent Paul Callaghan with a nett score of 68 (78-10).
Callaghan beat Chris Scarrett (80-12), who had the same nett score, on count-back. Third place went to Pete Stanley with a nett 69 (81-12).
Mike Izod came out on top in Division Two with an excellent nett 66 (86-20).
Despite starting his round with a double bogey six at the first hole, he stuck at it and, with the help of some superb putting, Izod set a target that was unbeatable on the day.
Second was Oliver Knight with a nett 67 (84-17), while third place, with two players returning a nett 70, was decided on count-back with Scott Ridley (84-14) just beating Robin Miles (84-14).
That meant that the Bill Onion Trophy for the day’s lowest round was won by popular member Izod.
Vice-captain Colin Cleary presented the trophy and Izod responded, explaining that, at 67-years-old and having played at the club for more years than he cared to remember, this was the first time in his life that he had ever won a golf competition.
