WORCESTER Golf and Country Club professional Graham Farr will aim to shine this week when he takes on some of golf’s biggest names in the prestigious De Vere Club PGA Seniors Championship.

The Boughton Park pro will be up against a host of star players including two-time major champion Sandy Lyle, US PGA champion and BBC TV commentator Wayne Grady, plus former Ryder Cup captains Sam Torrance, Ian Woosnam and Mark James when he tees up in the £250,000 event at Northumberland’s Slaley Hall from Thursday to Sunday.

Farr qualified for the event, which is the longest-running tournament on the European Senior Tour, after finishing in the top 20 at the Senior PGA Professional Championship at Northants County this month.

Meanwhile, two of Worcester Golf and Country Club’s long-standing members won their first major trophy recently.

Former captain Steve Blewett and his partner John Luby have won the occasional medal over the years, but they hit the jackpot when the pipped a large entry to pick up the prestigious Infirmary Bowls.

The better-ball medal competition was played over three days and saw Blewett and Luby finish with a nett 60.

Second place was decided on count-back with Trevor Stevens and Anthony Ottway finishing a shot behind the winners, but pipping Darren Phillips and Neil Grubb with a stronger back nine.

The junior section’s May medal was won by Jordan Wilson with a nett 64, closely followed by Josh Bryan on 65 and Sam Jones on 66. Bryan also recorded the day’s lowest gross with 73.

The Order of Merit sees Wilson topping the table with 10 points ahead of Bryan (8) and Sam Jones (6).
