PROLIFIC striker Luke Corbett has become Worcester City’s first new signing of the summer.
The 26-year-old scored 67 goals in 132 appearances in establishing Leamington as a Zamaretto League Premier Division force and has joined the St George’s Lane club for 2011/12.
Manager Carl Heeley has been tracking the Worcester-born forward, who began his career at Cheltenham Town, and has moved quickly to add him to the squad.
“He’s desperate to play for his home town club and he’s got a good goal-scoring record over the past few years,” the City boss said.
“We want to recruit as many local players as we can who we feel can do a job for us so I am more than happy to give Luke the opportunity. I have known about him for sometime and he wanted to come to the club.”
Corbett joins captain Ryan Clarke, fellow defenders Rob Elvins and Asa Charlton and midfield duo Kevin O’Connor and Tom Thorley on the books for the new Blue Square Bet North campaign.
The Brickfields-based forward’s arrival will boost City’s attacking options following the departure of Mark Danks.
Heeley is also hoping last season’s leading scorer Danny Glover will commit his future to the club but admits the 20-goal marksman is in talks with an unnamed club.
The manager, also interested in signing Worcester-born former Shrewsbury defender Harry Hooman, said: “Danny Glover is speaking to at least one other club trying to get the best deal he can for himself.
“But we are looking at our options as well and if we get those prior to Danny making his mind up then that’s the way it goes.
“The offer will remain there for him but we are actively looking at other options as well and it’s not going to be there forever.”
Utility player Neil Cartwright and midfielder Gary Walker are still considering offers, while striker Marc McGregor will use pre-season to test his fitness.
Heeley added: “Marc is going to come back in pre-season. He just wants to see how he feels in himself. You get honesty with Marc and he will tell us if he feels he can still play at this level.”
However, one player who will not be joining Worcester is Aaron Griffiths after the former Kidderminster Harriers left-back linked up with Stourbridge.
Heeley claimed he had shaken hands on a deal with the 21-year-old but Griffiths opted to join the Glassboys, who beat City in last season’s Worcestershire FA Senior Cup final.
Meanwhile, City will host Tamworth in a pre-season friendly at St George’s Lane on Saturday, August 6 (3pm).
