THERE was disappointment for the lightweight men’s double scull of Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter in their final at the World Rowing Cup meeting in Munich.

The Olympic and world champions found a superb burst of speed in the final 300 metres but could not make up lost ground on the lead three boats in the men’s lightweight double sculls. Despite the fourth place for the ex-King’s School Worcester pupil and his team-mate, Great Britain secured 11 medals on a successful final day, including five golds.

“We’ve put in a lot of training and will now go back and work on a few things,” admitted Hunter.

The duo had taken an early lead but, by the 500m mark, they had been overhauled by France and then Germany.

By half-way, France led with Germany second and GB third about half-a-length down.

The two leading boats opened up the gap on GB who were a length adrift at the 1,500m mark.

The sprint for the line saw Britain seek to take bronze from Belarus only to fall agonisingly short.

GB, including former Evesham Rowing Club star Alex Gregory, were among the successes in the men’s four race, seeing off Greece and Germany.
