CORNISH Pirates lock Ben Gulliver will today be revealed as a Worcester Warriors player as the latest piece of Richard Hill’s Aviva Premiership jigsaw falls into place.
With second row Will Bowley confirmed to be leaving Sixways last week, Gulliver will take his place and compete with veteran Craig Gillies and fellow newcomers James Percival and Chris Jones for a place in the Warriors boiler room.
Gulliver moved to Pirates after an impressive spell at Plymouth Albion and continued to catch the eye, earning himself a three-month loan spell with Leicester Tigers last term as cover for injured England international locks Geoff Parling and Louis Deacon.
Although Warriors have yet to officially confirm Gul-liver’s capture, Pirates owner Dicky Evans revealed on the club’s fans’ forum that a deal has been done.
He wrote: “Two players have taken their transfer option to higher-placed clubs that is in their contracts — Gully (Gulliver) to Worcester and Hopps (Matt Hopper) to Harlequins.”
Meanwhile, Warriors duo Matt Mullan and Graham Kitchener have been included in a youthful England squad for Sunday’s match against the Barbarians at Twickenham (2.30pm).
The Sixways academy-produced forwards will be hoping for some game-time in the non-capped match and the team will be prepared by England Saxons head coach Stuart Lancaster, who will be assisted by Jon Callard and Simon Hardy.
There are 11 players capped at senior level in the 24-man group, with fly-half Charlie Hodgson (Sale Sharks) the most experienced and the likes of Ugo Monye (Harlequins), James Simpson-Daniel (Gloucester) and Matt Banahan (Bath) providing the cutting edge.
But the overall accent is firmly on youth in a squad with an average age of 24 years and two months. Eight are graduates of the England Under 20 sides that reached IRB Junior World Champion-ship finals in 2008 and 2009.
Elsewhere, five Worcester players have been selected in the England women’s elite playing squad (EPS) for the 2011/2012 season.
Props Rochelle Clark and Laura Keates, flanker Heather Fisher, wing Kat Merchant and full-back Danielle Waterman have all made the grade.
Worcester trio Jennifer Brightmore, Charlotte Keane and Lydia Thompson were named in the England sevens squad.
England Forwards: Attwood (Gloucester), Brookes (Newcastle), Clark (Northampton Saints), Doran-Jones (Gloucester), Fearns, Gaskell (both Sale Sharks), Gray (Harlequins), Johnson (Exeter Chiefs), Kitchener (Worcester Warriors), Marler (Harlequins), Mullan (Worcester Warriors), Narraway (Gloucester), Paice (London Irish).
