EVESHAM Golf Club’s men took part in their monthly medal competition across two divisions.
Division One is for players with handicaps of scratch to 12, while Division Two is for those with handicaps of 13 and above. Additionally, all entrants were playing for the Rotary Cup.
After the long spell of dry weather, the course was in surprisingly good condition and the greens were presented in the best condition so far this year.
A strong wind and bone-dry fairways made playing conditions challenging, especially for those who played in the afternoon session.
Despite the number of promising youngsters at the club, it was the more experienced players who took the leading places on the day.
Veterans Neville Ashman and Gerry Ricketts took first and second place respectively in Division One with nett scores of 70 (82-12) and 71 (82-11). Former club champion Stu Ridley was third with 72 (77-5), while the under-rated Paul Sharpe (83-10=73) took fourth place on count-back.
He just beat current club champion and two-handicapper Oliver Farrell, whose gross score of 75 was the best of the day.
In Division Two, Matt Langmead came out on top with a nett score of 66 (82-16), while Pete Stanley took second spot with a nett 69 (82-13).
Derek Boocock (86-16=70) was third on count-back, from Cliff Edwards.
The Rotary Cup, for the lowest gross score, was presented to Langmead by club captain Richard Cross, who also announced the winner’s handicap was being cut by two shots to 14.
