IT was a night to remember at Sixways as thousands of jubilant Worcester Warriors fans were finally able to sing in unison “we are the champions”.
A nine-point lead from the first leg should have given the 12,000 crowd reason to relax and enjoy the occasion but it wasn’t until midway through the second half when they could really start the celebrations.
The players came on to the field to a raucous reception with chants of “come on you Warriors” echoing around the ground.
But the first points of the night went to Cornish Pirates, cutting the lead to just six points and giving the small pocket of fans who had travelled north reason to hope.
But as the game wore on, Warriors kept edging in front, making the chance of an upset more and more unlikely.
When crowd favourite Andy Goode was sent clear to touch down with 25 minutes to go the entire east stand were on their feet with flags waving high.
You could sense it was a defining moment – not just in the game, but in the entire season – it was as if Goode could see the Championship trophy at the other side of the try-line.
The conversion took the overall lead to 28 points and a few fans starting looking for their Cuban cigars.
A late rally from Pirates took the score on the night to 25-20, which proved just how valuable the nine- point head start was.
As the seconds ticked away the fans were once again on their feet to not only cheer the final whistle but to breathe a huge sigh of relief.
It was not long before champagne corks were popping and the huge crowd were applauding the team as they paraded around the pitch with the Championship trophy.
Joining the celebrations was former Worcester player Ian Carmichael, who played for the team between 1955 and 1965.
He said: “It was a fantastic game and a fantastic way to finish the season. The crowd and the atmosphere were absolutely tremendous.
“The Pirates played their part too and kept going right until the end.”
Callum Ross and John Mullard, both aged 17, of Kidderminster were also in party mood. Mr Ross said: “It was easily my favourite game of the season. The atmosphere was superb.
“It got a bit nervy when they got to within five points but Warriors got the job done in the end.”
Mr Mullard added: “It was amazing. Marcel Garvey was my man of the match.
"I think Worcester will do much better in the Premiership this time round. They are a lot stronger.”
