WORCESTER’S swimmers enjoyed an excellent result at the Gloucester Open by winning the prestigious trophy for the best visiting team.

Alice O’Toole provided the highlight with a magnificent time of one minute 5.06 seconds in the 100-metres backstroke to record her first national qualifying time.

Winner of the under 14s 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle as well, this was reward for all her hard work and dedication.

There were also nine new qualifying times for next month’s Midland Age Group Championships with Jack Weston (four), Francesca Daniels (two), James Marsh (two) and Mike Adair (one) all in scintillating form.

Weston recorded some impressive personal best times, winning a hat-trick of gold medals in the u13s 200m and 400m freestyle as well as the 200m backstroke.

Marsh and Adair were equally impressive, notching up 11 PBs and 15 medals between them in the u14s.

This included a spectacular one-two in the 100m butterfly, Adair just edging his team-mate out with both boys comfortably inside the Midland qualifying time.

In the u12s, Daniels stormed to victory in her favoured 200m backstroke event but it was the Midland time she achieved in both the 200m and 400m freestyle that gave the greatest satisfaction.

A further 15 Worcester swimmers won medals for an overall total of 89.

In the 10-year-old age group, Harry Bamforth was in sparkling form, proving himself a real all-rounder by winning six gold medals in events as diverse as the 50m backstroke and 400m freestyle.

Sophie Monks swam well to win five medals, including gold in the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke.

In the u11s, Lucy Clayton had to settle for silver in the 50m and 200m breaststroke but swam a brilliantly paced race to beat her Halesowen rival in the 100m event, only narrowly missing her national qualifying time.

Sophie Groves outclassed the others in the u12s butterfly, winning gold in the 50m and 100m events.

She then produced a superb PB to also take the 4x50m individual medley with team-mate Caitlin Adair then winning the 4x100m individual medley.

In the 15-year-old section, Daniel Adair and Tabitha Monkhouse won eight and seven medals respectively.

Both completed the 100m and 200m butterfly double, while Daniel Adair also won gold in the 400m individual medley and Monkhouse dominated the breaststroke to win the 50m, 100m and 200m.

Joel Smith proved himself the fastest in the pool in the 16 and over age group with victory in the 50m freestyle.

Hollie Horton won four gold medals, including a backstroke clean sweep in the 50m, 100m and 200m events.

There were also medals for Josie Morris, Emma Lovesey, Matthew Rochell and Fred van Vuren, while Bethany Hill, India Fern, Mia Tranter, Hope Rochell, Carmen Elliott, Kate Lovesey and Dan Clark all produced PB performances.

In addition, Eloise van Vuren and Rupert Monkhouse both broke the 60-second barrier over 100m. Eloise van Vuren recorded 59.55 seconds in the ladies’ freestyle with Rupert Monkhouse recording 59.65 secs for his butterfly.
