TEENAGE prospect Emily Lewis was among the Worcester Canoe Club successes at the National Sprint Regatta in Nottingham.

The Malvern 17-year-old won the K1 sprint finals over 200 metres, 500m and 1,000m and the K2 final over 200m.

Lewis also came second in the K2 final over 1,000m to follow up a fine display in April’s first regatta at the National Watersports Centre.

She has been helped by the University of Worcester’s motion performance centre which helped with exercise and health-related disciplines.

Lewis worked closely with sport psychology consultant Andrea Faull.

The St Mary’s Girls’ School pupil said: “It really helped me to focus completely on my own performance and not worry about the other athletes around me.

“It gave me more confidence and determination to succeed.”

Lewis is on the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) and had approached the first major regatta of the season with trepidation following an injury to her shoulder which interrupted her training programme.

She was elated with her performance which was followed by selection for an international regatta in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, this weekend.

Her goal is selection for the Junior European Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, and the World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany, with her long-term aim being to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Fine results were achieved by other Worcester members in Nottingham.

Promotions were earned by William Bird to boys’ ‘A’, Jon Cave to masters ‘B’ and Jon Bird to masters ‘A’.
