TAKE one look at the Professional Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Players and you might be surprised to see who Worcestershire’s leading man is.

You might think with one century and two 50s in LV= County Championship Division One, prior to the match in Somerset, that Alexei Kervezee would be the star man at the New Road.

Or possibly even the evergreen Alan Richardson with his 15 wickets at 27.86.

What about Vikram Solanki who is leading the way once more in the Clydesdale Bank 40?

But you would be wrong. The man who is Worcestershire’s top performer in the opening month of the new campaign is Gareth Andrew.

The former Somerset all-rounder made big strides last year with the bat and he also improved with the ball.

And the 27-year-old has continued on that upward curve this season.

Not only has he taken 10 wickets in the championship, Andrew, who joined in 2008 as a bowling all-rounder, is also averaging more 31 with the bat in the four-day format.

Andrew also went into yesterday’s CB40 match with Derbyshire Falcons as Worcestershire’s leading wicket-taker with six at 13.83 and in his innings against Middlesex he scored 22.

He has developed into a more than useful performer for Steve Rhodes’ side.

Andrew may not be cut from the same cloth as Andy Bichel, but Worcestershire do now possess a genuine fast bowling all-rounder.
