SKIPPER Ryan Clarke says being named player-of-the-year at Worcester City means everything.

The 27-year-old centre-half, who joined in September when Ilkeston Town were wound up, has had an excellent season for the St George’s Lane side and his efforts were recognised with the top award.

He has also given the Blue Square Bet North outfit a boost by committing his future to the club for another season.

Lincolnshire-based Clarke, who also claimed the gong in 2008 following his only other City campaign, said: “It means absolutely everything, especially with the fans voting because they are the most important people really.

“If they didn’t come and pay to watch there wouldn’t be a club.

“I am very proud to have won in each of the two years I have played at Worcester, it’s always nice to look back on.”

Clarke is the third player to agree to another 12 months — following one-year deals for Kevin O’Connor and Tom Thorley — and is hoping to be joined by several of his team-mates.

“It’s probably the most enjoyable season I have had since I was at the club last time,” he said.

“I know what City are all about so Carl didn’t have to sell it to me and I enjoy playing for him.

“The only frustrating element is the travelling but I am happy to put up with that.

“Tom and Kevin have had a brilliant season and, all being well, there will be a number of other lads committing themselves as well.”

Clarke is already looking forward to the new campaign and believes it could be more of a level playing field financially following Alfreton’s promotion and Eastwood Town being up for sale.

“I think next season will be interesting,” he added. “I don’t really see anyone racing away with the league.

“It could be a lot more of an even division which would give us more of a chance.”
