IT was announced yesterday Matt Kvesic has extended his Worcester Warriors contract and that is great news for the club.
You sometimes have to remind yourself he is only 18-years-old — playing alongside him makes me feel old! He is just a pure, raw talent and has extremely good physical shape to back it up, one of the strongest we’ve got.
He’s old beyond his years in terms of his rugby brain, so it is a real positive for the club that we have managed to keep him on board.
But, after all the nice comments he’s been getting, we’ll have to knock him down a peg or two and I’m sure Foro (Chris Fortey) and Blacky (Adam Black) will be just the people to do that!
I’m sure Matt’s decision to stay will set the tone for years to come as guys continue to commit their future to Worcester. The guys who have decided to move on, like Tom Wood and Graham Kitchener, have been given a good platform here to showcase their game.
In a couple of years’ time, Worcester will be in a position where we can show guys in top form and in control of games, which is when people will go on to get full international selections. Hopefully, Matt is just the start of that and he is exactly the kind of player we can build this club around.
Meanwhile, we saw a few changes in key positions for our 44-13 victory over Nottingham at the weekend with Joe Carlisle at 10 and Tom Arscott playing full-back as well as the front row boys swapping around. It was a really important win and good to set the record straight.
From Nottingham saying we offered nothing at their place in the previous meeting, we showed them that they will struggle against us if we play well.
Joey ran the game, Jonny Arr gave us a good platform to attack from with some good kicks in behind Nottingham and the forwards really fronted up.
From what I saw, it was a real cheap shot by Tom Youngs on Kai Horstmann. Tom is a very good player and is professional, so it must have been a moment of madness.
Also, if he’d known Kai has a three-inch thick skull, he might have found someone else instead!
Either way, we have ticked off Nottingham and now face a tough trip to London Welsh.
I think it is a bit optimistic for me to be back from my rib injury in time for that game, so we’ll probably wait and hopefully I’ll be back and ready for the match with Bristol at Sixways the week after.
As their finish to the regular league season showed, London Welsh are clearly one of the top teams in the Championship.
They probably have the most balance in terms of the teams we’ve played this season. They have a very physical pack and a really dangerous set of backs as well as experienced players in key positions.
On their day, they can be an extremely tough team to play against.
