TWO schoolgirls fought out an all-Worcester final at the West Midlands Fencing Championships with both advancing to the nationals in May.

Alix Turley beat fellow Royal Grammar School Worcester pupil Danielle Lawson, 12, in the under 14s epee contest.

They were on good form in the early rounds, being seeded first and second after the pools.

The duo won their semis convincingly, leading to a thrilling final lasting the whole nine minutes with the lead swapping several times.

Turley, 14, was two hits ahead by the end against her younger opponent and marked a second triumph as she won the under 14s foil title the previous weekend.

“I’m really pleased to have won both events as I do a lot of training and it’s good to see the hard work pay off,” she said.

“Both competitions were tough and I was especially pleased that Danielle fenced so well in the epee and made it a really exciting final.”

Both girls qualify for the British Youth Championships national finals at the England Institute of Sport, Sheffield.
