KEEPING our momentum building is key going into the Championship play-offs.
Sunday evening saw us achieve just that with a good 38-24 win over Nottingham.
Although the performance was far from perfect, at no point did I feel we would come away with anything other than a win.
In what was a weekend of fairly against-the-grain results, we kept on course to securing promotion led by the points machine that is Andy Goode.
We scored some really good team tries along the way and I was pleased with our ball retention in attack — at one point there was a stat of us having 96 per cent possession for a 10-minute stretch in the game. Teams will struggle to score against us if they don’t have the ball.
Our defence was by no means perfect, but I do feel it was much improved. The number of Nottingham opportunities from first phase was far less than last week.
There were still a couple of errors in our system, which against tougher opposition will be exploited, but improvements were made. Where Nottingham are strong is in broken play and we allowed them to counter-attack well, which was disappointing.
Once again we saw our pack dominate their opposite numbers. The sight of the forwards marching along in the driving line-out is one I look forward to seeing on the pitch myself soon.
They are creating some excellent ball for our backs to play off, we are very fortunate as a back division. Aleki Lutui seemed to be carrying the ball every other breakdown, then carrying half the Nottingham team along with him. His work rate is incredible and I for one am just glad he’s on my side.
Well, the boys have taken the journey up to Currie for the second time and, when I wrote this, they were probably just passing Carlisle and Callum Black would have lost all his money to Will Bowley in the poker.
The team are fired up and really looking forward to getting some game time under their belts.
Matt Mullan is set to play his first game of rugby in a while tonight and, fingers crossed, it all goes smoothly. I cannot wait to see him back playing at Sixways soon — and hopefully I will be joining him too!
On Saturday, we welcome London Welsh to Sixways for another tough test against play-off opposition. The Welsh exiles enjoyed a good win on home soil against Bedford, so will be coming to us full of confidence. It is our job to strip them of this confidence and send them on their way with no doubts as to who is the better team.
Last time, it was a hard-fought Warriors victory, 33-29. They will, however, meet a much-improved side to the one they faced back in November. Our facial hair has also vastly improved since then.
