HAVING never previously won at “Fortress Fengate”, Malvern made the long journey to Peterborough buoyed by four wins out of five in National Three Midlands and came away with a 44-19 triumph.

After just two minutes, several phases of tight forward play released Richard Fleming to send Tommi Hughes in for the opening score, before Adam Dixon put over a penalty in the ninth minute.

Using a controlled rucking game, the Spring Lane men patiently worked their way forward, sucking in the defence then releasing the backs as Fleming put scrum-half Tom Longley away for his first score of the afternoon.

Dixon judged his kick well in the swirling wind to bag the extra two points.

Just before the half-hour mark, a Boro clearance went straight to Longley, who waltzed in for a 20-point lead.

Peterborough wing Balcionas found a gap for a 37th-minute try, which was converted by Low.

This spurred Malvern into action and they won a scrum in the home 22, which saw Longley nip through on the blindside to bag a fourth try bonus point on the stroke of half-time.

With Peterborough unable to establish any ascendancy, they began to lose discipline and their prop was sin-binned.

A needless home knock-on was picked up by Longley to increase the lead and for Dixon to kick in to the teeth of the gale for the conversion.

With 10 minutes left, Peterborough fought back with two tries in quick succession.

Longley then put pressure on his opposite number, who dropped the ball, allowing the on-song Malvern scrum-half to grab his fifth score of the day.

With two minutes left, Dave Hunter stole the ball on the Malvern 22 and stormed up the wing for his maiden try to finish an excellent performance by the visitors.

Malvern now face their sternest task of the season — a massive local derby against Bromsgrove, who ran in 99 points against a bereft Kenilworth.

The league-leaders are in top form and, with two sides who like to run the ball, all the pointers are to a feast of rugby at Spring Lane on Saturday (2.15pm).
