WORCESTER City are calling on the crowds to return to St George’s Lane between now and the end of the season.

Although six months of the campaign have already gone, City still have half of their home Blue Square Bet North fixtures to play following a winter of postponements.

Including today’s visit of Boston United (3pm), Carl Heeley’s team have 10 more league matches in the diary before the end of April.

It will be a welcome boost to the club’s bank balance, particularly as three of those games come in the next nine days with Stalybridge Celtic in town next Saturday and Hyde 48 hours later.

City’s average league gate so far this season is 745 but attendances dipped during January and December —dropping to 408 against Vauxhall Motors on December 13.

The weather is likely to have been a major contributing factor, but City officials want to see the larger crowds returning over the coming weeks in their bid to break even.

Vice-chairman Andrew Watson said: “We are urging as many people to come as possible.

“We have got three home games coming up in which, hopefully, we can entertain people and bring in some numbers.

“It’s vital that we get decent numbers like we did in the early part of the season.

“We are not going to go bust or anything, but it is vital to keep that momentum going.

“It enables Carl to attract the quality of players we have seen at the club this season, so keeping the crowds up is crucial.”

He added: “The board has got a very strong drive to break even this season and, as long as the gates stay reasonable, then I believe we are on track.

“The crowd numbers for the first half of the campaign were better than expected, so we have covered the loss of the Ilkeston game but we really do need the numbers.”

Ilkeston went out of business earlier in the season, meaning every team in the division lost one home game from the fixture list.
