SATURDAY'S exquisite FA Trophy winner is the start of something big for George Clegg.
So says the skilful Mancunian, who promises Worcester City supporters more left-foot fancy work in the second-half of the season.
Clegg's new year resolution is simple. He wants to finally end his injury nightmare and play a more defining role improving City's Nationwide North position.
It has been a frustrating stop-start campaign for the former Manchester United and Bury man, who became Andy Preece's first City signing back in February this year.
He was unavailable for Worcester's first two league games of the season, abroad on holiday booked prior to joining the club.
Then, during a reserve fixture against Bromsgrove in September, Clegg strained medial ligaments to his knee.
It was an injury well known to the 25-year-old who suffered more threatening ligament damage during his time at Gigg Lane.
Clegg returned to the first-team fray in October, arriving off the bench at Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup, but starting appearances have been very limited.
Only now is the attacking midfielder showing signs that a regular senior berth is his for keeps.
Incredibly, the strike that sunk Hayes was Clegg's fourth of the season from just five starts.
"I've not played that many games," said Clegg. "That performance was probably my best of the season. I've scored my goal and hopefully my performance has warranted me a place in the side again for next week.
"That's what I need, because training does not compare to match fitness. I need to be out there and playing games. Hopefully, I can play a few more, improve my fitness and score more goals.
"I'd be lying if I said I was fully match-fit. I'd like to be a bit sharper and that will come with games and by putting the work in.
"Games are coming thick and fast over Christmas and the new year, so that might do me the world of good.
"It's difficult keeping your place. The gaffer is spoilt for choice in midfield and they are all good players. Any one of us, on any given day, can do a job in there.
"That's why you've got to keep on your toes and perform all the time, in training and in games, so I'm happy to have the opportunity."
Despite having just a handful of appearances to strut his stuff, Clegg is Worcester's leading goalscorer from midfield, well ahead of Tom Warmer, Graham Hyde and Nick Colley.
He accepts there is responsibility on his shoulders to hit the scoresheet as often as possible, although creating chances for City's strikers is his number one priority.
Clegg is aiming for plenty more goals in Worcester colours and hopes his efforts can propel the club up the table.
He added: "I love scoring. Every day and every game I approach, I want to score and I want to do well.
"Every midfielder has different qualities and I think I offer something different to the other lads here.
"Scoring goals from midfield and creating goals is my game really. If I'm not doing that, I'm not doing my job properly.
"It's important I keep chipping away, helping us win our games. We've got a lot of matches in hand, but that does not necessarily mean we are going to win them.
"We've got to win these games in hand and climb up the league table. I'm sure if we can put a few performances together, it will all come good in the end."
