RUSHWICK First XI skipper Ryan Lane believes team spirit was the key to his side's 175-run demolition of Old Elizabethans.

It was a performance which saw Rushwick climb away from the bottom of division three south and earned them our team-of-the-week accolade.

They set a target of 265, thanks to the batting of Matt Davies (119) and 16-year-old Tom Bryant (58).

They then bowled OEs out for just 90 with Leon Wood taking 7-55.

"We batted quite well for a change," said Lane. "They won the toss and stuck us in but I would have batted anyway. Tom is sensational at the top of the order and he scores quickly. He and Matt played superbly.

"We have struggled to match targets so we like to get runs on the board early.

"When we bowled, we got a couple of wickets and they just kept falling. They just crumbled and we finished nice and early.

"The wicket played up a little bit but it couldn't have been that bad if we got 265."

It has been Lane's first season as captain and while he admits it has been a "baptism of fire", the team's form has picked up of late.

"We have played a lot better in the second half of the season," he said. "Team spirit is a lot better and we are playing for each other.

"We had a good result against Himbleton which set us off on a couple of good performances.

"It all just seemed to click on Saturday."

He added: "We played OEs in the first half of the season. It tipped down and we didn't have much of the game. I wasn't expecting such an easy win."

Rushwick receive a box of Fearnley cricket balls, worth £90, for their achievement.
