STEVE RHODES COLUMN
WE have decided to give Zaheer Khan a rest against Warwickshire today, but we have been really pleased with what he has done since joining us.
If he can maintain his form over the rest of the season, I'm sure we will have talks about his situation. We will have to see how much cricket India are playing next year and if he is in the reckoning.
What we want here are people who fit in in the dressing room and people who perform successfully on the pitch and he certainly ticks both of those boxes, so it's clear why I should want to hold talks with him.
With the win against Somerset, I think in other games we've played better but lost, however this game was won by a fantastic innings by Graeme Hick.
He kept a cool head when wickets were falling around him.
We needed someone to stick with him, which never really happened, and that put him under more pressure.
Roger Sillence did a great job to clear the ropes twice, which took some of the pressure off Hicky, but unfortunately he could not keep it going.
Thankfully Graeme was still there at the end to make sure we won the game.
Cameron White's innings was a great knock, but I think Hicky's effort was better as he was under pressure to chase down a total.
White hit the big shots, but also took the singles well, scoring off every ball, which made it very difficult for us to bowl to him.
Vikram Solanki is also a dangerous batsman to bowl at and he showed his class by scoring 33 off just 12 balls. Hopefully, we will see more of the same from him against Warwickshire later today.
As for the Twenty20 itself, we are learning all the time. It is a competition that has eluded us so far, but wins like the ones against Warwickshire and Somerset will put us in good stead for next year.
We learn more about the way to bat, bowl and field in this competition with every game and we are getting more confident all the time.
I can't predict how we'll get on in Twenty20 next year, but we will certainly be giving it our best shot again.
Also, Lou Vincent has fitted in well since joining up with us. It was difficult for him to come in and make a big impact in Twenty20 cricket, but he has played aggressively and contributed some good runs.
We are very happy with him and he has been a lot of fun to have around the place -- he is the type of guy we want to have around here.
We start our Pro40 campaign soon and I don't think it will be too different to 45-over cricket.
The main concern is when in the 45 overs we will bowl our spinners -- it could be that they bowl in the first 15 overs which will be a bit different. However, with the squad we have got, I believe Worcester-shire are well-suited to both forms of cricket.
