FORMER Worcester City player Andy Awford is to be inducted into the Portsmouth hall of fame.
Awford, who began his career at St George’s Lane as a teenager loaned from Pompey in 1987, remains the youngest player to feature in any round of the FA Cup, having played for City aged 15 years 88 days against Boreham Wood.
The central defender made his debut for Portsmouth as a 16-year-old and made 361 appearances over 13 seasons at Fratton Park, playing in the 1992 FA Cup semi-final defeat against Liverpool.
Awford, whose father Terry also played for Worcester in the 1960s, will be one of five players honoured — the others being John Milkins, Len Phillips, Duggie Reid and Mick Tait — at Fratton Park on Friday, March 19.
An England schoolboy, youth and under 21 international, Awford was forced to retire aged 28 after a series of injuries, including a broken leg, hampered his career.
Now 37, he also had a spell as assistant manger at Bognor Regis Town, going up against City three times during the 2008/09 season in Blue Square South.
