KIDDERMINSTER Harriers manager Mark Yates wants his side to prove they are capable of winning the FA Trophy.
The Aggborough club travel to Derbyshire tomorrow (3pm) to take on a Matlock outfit sitting two rungs below them in the non-league football pyramid in the Unibond Premier.
It is Harriers’ first match of the season in a competition which has been good to them in recent years following their run to the final in 2007.
Although a repeat appearance at Wembley is a long way off, Yates believes his team have to show they can be contenders.
He said: “It’s likely one team in the top 10 of the Blue Square Premier will win the Trophy so why not us?
“We are five games away from Wembley so we need to get through and put ourselves in the frame.
“Without being over-confident, we are a couple of leagues above them and have got to go there with the intention of getting through.”
Matlock, who saw off Witton Albion in the last round, could prove tricky customers for Harriers, having gone 10 games unbeaten despite sitting 13th in their league.
Kidderminster will have to change in a nearby cricket pavilion as Matlock’s Causeway Lane ground is currently undergoing a £600,000 renovation.
Yates added: “We have had them watched and they are decent so it’s going to be tough.
“The pitch isn’t in the best of states. They played on it last weekend and it cut up.
“But we have stressed to the players that they have got to go there with the right attitude.
“We have got to deal with the conditions and with whatever they throw at us.”
Experienced midfielder John Finnigan (groin) has been ruled out and on-loan Luton striker Ryan Charles has been denied permission to play by his parent club.
Harriers are also waiting to hear from Kettering Town on whether they can field loanee forward Damian Spencer with Aaron Farrell waiting in the wings.
Defender Martin Riley is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in last Saturday’s 2-0 league defeat at Stevenage.
