OLYMPIC archer Naomi Folkard has vowed to make up for lost time by bagging Commonwealth and European medals next year.
The 26-year-old from Kidderminster has endured a torrid 12 months since falling agonisingly short of an Olympic bronze in Beijing.
Folkard, who along with Charlotte Burgess and Alison Williamson was edged out of a place on the podium by two points by France, saw her 2009 season left in tatters after undergoing shoulder surgery last Christmas.
But, with the Olympics set to roll into London, Folkard is desperate to get back on track by climbing the podium twice in 2010.
“It would be good, looking forward to 2012, to get among the medals this year,” said Folkard, who finished eighth at the Shanghai World Cup but crashed out of the World Championships in the second round of the recurve.
“I was hit with the shoulder injury at Christmas and that knocked me back in my preparations for the season. This winter, I should have a clean run through training and then I can get back to how I’m capable of performing in 2010.
“I managed a silver medal at the European Championships last time so that is a minimum next year.
“If I can do that and follow it up with a medal at the Commonwealths then that would be a great way to make up for the year I have just had.
“It would restore a lot of my confidence and would set me on a great road with just 18 months or so to go to the 2012 Games.”
Archery made its solitary appearance at the Commonwealths in the 1982 Brisbane Games when England’s Mark Blenkarne claimed gold.
With the event set to make its return in Delhi in October, Folkard is determined to claim England’s first female medal. Folkard added: “It would be very special to medal next year, but to medal in what is such a rare opportunity for archers at the Commonwealths would be great.
“It is very exciting to have archery back at the Commonwealth Games and I’ll be going there full of hope.
“If you look at the opposition, the world’s strongest teams are probably the Asian nations but the likes of China, Korea, Japan and France won’t be there.
“We should be there as one of the favourites and that counts in the individual events as well.”
