TWO England youth internationals will go straight into Hereford United’s squad for Saturday’s FA Cup second round clash with League One high-fliers Colchester United (3pm).
Stoke City’s Nathaniel Wedderburn, 18, and Birmingham City’s Jordon Mutch, 17, have been given permission by their Premier League clubs to feature for the Bulls in the competition after joining on loan until January.
Although both teenagers, the midfielders bring a significant physical presence with Wedderburn standing at 6ft 3ins and Mutch at 6ft 2ins.
The Stoke player, who can also feature at centre-half, enjoyed a loan spell with Notts County last season and has featured for England Under 19s.
Mutch, an international at under 17s level, became the second youngest player to appear for the Blues after Trevor Francis when he faced Southampton in the Carling Cup last year.
Trewick has also extended the loan spell of Danny Blanchett for an extra month from Peterborough but winger Mark Marshall has returned to Swindon Town.
Despite the comings and goings — striker Lee Morris has joined Mansfield on loan until January — Hereford go into the Edgar Street cup clash full of confidence.
The Bulls earned the early-season bragging rights following their 2-1 mid-week win over rivals Shrewsbury.
Trewick knows his side will need every ounce of that spirit against a team vying to get back to the Championship.
Colchester are third in League One and have only lost four games this season.
“If we play to our best, then we will have a chance,” Trewick said. “They are third in their league and going extremely well.
“But we are going well too. We have lost twice in our last 12 games but we should never have been beaten last weekend at Burton Albion.
“I have been pleased with the performances and hopefully we can keep those going on Saturday.”
Trewick is hopeful his side can see off Aidy Boothroyd’s men at Edgar Street and set up a glamour tie with one of the Premier League big boys in the third round.
“It would be terrific to have a good run,” Trewick said. “Any cup run is welcome as far as I’m concerned.
“If we can beat Colchester, hopefully we can get one of the massive clubs from the Premier League.”
Hereford are hopeful over the fitness of defender Ryan Green (thigh) but there are doubts over Gambian midfielder Eddie Sonko after he called in ill today.
