WORCESTERSHIRE director of cricket Steve Rhodes says he would contemplate bringing Doug Bollinger back to New Road.

The 28-year-old spent an ill-fated few months with the County in 2007 and his spell saw him dubbed one of the County’s worst overseas signings.

However, the left-arm quick returned home to Australia and showed just why Rhodes signed him.

On Thursday, Bollinger is in line to win his second Test cap for the Baggy Greens as they face West Indies in Brisbane.

With Rhodes still searching for an overseas player for the opening few months of the 2010 season after capturing Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, some County supporters would like to see Bollinger return.

“Would I consider bringing Doug back? Of course I would,” Rhodes said. “Anybody who gets into the Australian side is a very good player.”

The New Road chief is all too aware Bollinger’s time with Worcestershire did not go to plan as he struggled to adapt to the early-season conditions in England.

In seven LV County Championship matches, Bollinger only claimed 16 wickets at 44.56 but, on his return to New South Wales, the Aussie struck 45 times at 15.44 and has been averaging under 30 since.

“We know his time with us didn’t go as well as everyone would have liked,” Rhodes admitted.

“But he has worked hard, improved his game and got himself in the Australia team.”

Since leaving Worcestershire, Bollinger made his Test debut at the start of 2009 against South Africa and has won seven one-day international caps for the Baggy Greens.

His most recent ODI matches came against India earlier this month when he claimed nine wickets at 19.33, including a five-wicket haul.

“Is he on my list at the moment? I’d have to say no,” Rhodes said. “But I don’t want to reveal what type of player I’m looking for.”

The County need to bring in a wicketkeeper for at least the first half of the season with 17-year-old Ben Cox still at school.

Rhodes is considering a number of options, looking at both overseas players and potential loan signings.

Meanwhile, he is hopeful Alexei Kervezee will return to pre-season training shortly after the Holland international had his appendix removed.

Rhodes said pre-season training was going well with new strength and conditioning coach Ross Dewar fitting in.

“He has got a great deal of respect from the players,” Rhodes added. “He has 10 years of experience in professional cricket and that is holding a lot of credence with the lads.”
