MANAGER Richard Dryden is hoping Worcester City’s success against Burnham can spark a run in the FA Trophy.
Matt Birley and Craig Wilding scored the goals as City won their first match in the competition since beating Burton Albion in January 2007.
They are in the hat for today’s first round proper draw and are looking to make their mark on non-league’s premier knock-out event.
City fell behind in the match but Dryden was pleased to see his team hit back immediately and believes they were worthy of victory.
The manager said: “Burnham started well and put a lot of pressure on us. Having watched them play beforehand, we knew what the threat was. Striker Ryan Bird will definitely go up a couple of leagues at least and he probably caused us more problems than anybody else this season.
“Any team who work hard on their set-plays and have got big players who are determined to attack good deliveries are going to cause problems.
“It was disappointing how we defended it as we practised hard on Thursday. We’re through and we could have scored more.
“We did have to work hard to win the game, Burnham shoved a lot of players up front but the crowd gave us a great send off.
“I could hear them cheering and laughing on the way home so hopefully that’s a bit of cup fever. If the draw’s lucky again we’ll see how far we can progress.”
Mark Clyde, wearing the captain’s armband instead of the injured Tom Kemp, also thought City deserved to win but felt they made life hard for themselves. He said: “The wind and the rain levelled things out, but fair play to Burnham they gave it a go.
“If we’d have taken our chances sooner in the game it might have been a little bit different but we’re through and that’s the main thing.
“You have got to approach every game in the right manner and I think, after the first 10 minutes, we approached it right.”
City are now unbeaten in three league and cup games and Clyde is hoping they can continue that form when Bishop’s Stortford visit in Blue Square South on Saturday.
He said: “We’re back on track and hopefully we can start moving up the league.”
