SHABIR Khan believes he will return to Worcester City a better player for his exploits with Pakistan.

The left-back flew out to Qatar on Thursday for a week-long training camp ahead of the South Asian Football Federation Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The competition runs between December 4 and 14 and includes fixtures against Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the hosts.

Shabir is due back in England on Thursday, December 17, two days before Richard Dryden’s side host Maidenhead United in Blue Square South.

Having initially been offered the chance in August, Shabir is one of several British-based players who have been selected to represent Pakistan and he is looking forward to the experience.

He will be joined by Bridgend defender Atif Bashir, Leamington forward Reis Ashraf and midfielder Amjad Iqbal of Bradford Park Avenue.

“They approached me after the Woking game and asked if I would be interested and I said yes,” he said. “I had to think about it and ask my boss at work.

“Richard Dryden was happy for me to go as well, so with both of my bosses really supportive that made up my mind.

“At first I wasn’t too happy about going away for that long but I have come to terms with it now.

“I learn every time I play, even with Worcester, so it will help me develop as a player and learn a few more things.

“I am very proud. I think the last City international was Justin Thompson with Canada. I am going to go out and try and enjoy myself.”

Meanwhile, striker Rob Elvins will be banned for one match after picking up his fifth booking of the season. He is due to miss the Blue Square South trip to Thurrock on Tuesday, December 1.
