TWO of Evesham Golf Club’s talented juniors reached the last 16 of the Worcestershire under 18s matchplay tournament.
Jake Payne and Ryan Cleary had qualified earlier at a strokeplay event at Fulford Heath and took part in the knockout stage at Gaude Luce golf club, playing for the John Fraser Cup.
Cleary won his first match but then went out to Kristian Allen from north Worcestershire in the quarter-final.
Allen then won through to the final where he met Payne and after six holes, a number of birdies had put Allen three up but Payne fought back and won the match on the 18th.
Payne’s handicap went down to three and Cleary’s to four.
Meanwhile, Evesham’s men hosted the Worcestershire ‘A’ Team League’s end of season match and annual general meeting.
Worcester Golf and Country Club won the league, led by captain Tony Sanders, and last year’s winning captain, Paul Hutchinson from Kidderminster, presented the trophy to him at the event.
Five clubs were able to take part in a friendly match, which Evesham won with an average score of 35.5 points.
The Worcestershire came second with an average of 33.2 and Kidderminster were third with an average of 32.7
