THE weather was good for the second round of The Worcestershire’s winter betterball competition and scores of more than 40 stableford points were abundant.
Brothers Jason and Neil Allies, recent winners of the Ledbury Cup foursomes and playing off six and fiverespectively, produced another excellent performance, with their score of 47 points taking the title.
In second place, on 45 points, was Andy McCabe (5) and Phil Birch (8) and they qualify, along with the Allies, for the match-play stage later this winter.
Just one point behind and so close to qualifying, were some half-dozen pairs, headed by competition committee chairman, Andy Davis (11), and his regular partner, Roy Cale (22). All of those who just missed out have two more rounds in which to try to repeat their scores of 44.
A number of winners of trophies which were decided on events running throughout the summer have now been declared. The Erskine Cup went to Steven Lane for his 69 — the best gross score in the four main medals. The College Cup was won by Roger Brierley, appropriately as a former College master, for his nett score of 291 in those four medals.
Andy Longley secured the Tweddell Trophy for the best nett average score over six medal rounds played off a single-figure handicap, while Andy Jones won the EW Evans Trophy for being the first player to reach 100 stableford points over three specified rounds.
The Gadd Brothers Trophy went to Clive Taylor who had the best score (nine under) for any monthly medal.
Mehdi Gerami’s score of 68 in the spring meeting won him the English Golf Union gold medal.
