WORCESTER City’s defeat to Welling United was described by manager Richard Dryden as a terrible performance.

City slipped to 19th place in Blue Square South with their second loss in a row and only their second at St George’s Lane since mid-September.

The manager was critical of his team’s display from the first minute to the last against a team who started the day just one position above Worcester in the table.

He said: “It was a terrible performance. We didn’t start right from the kick-off and it just got worse and worse.

“I didn’t see any desire again and that’s two games on the trot. I’ll give them the Eastleigh game but there’s no excuse at home with the way we have played and been supported.

“We had a chance to climb above a side in the league and we haven’t taken it. From the kick-off we gave them a spark because they closed us down quickly and won the ball. It gave them a spark and I think our first moment was Craig Wilding’s shot.”

Dryden was particularly annoyed to see all the hard work put in on the training pitch go out of the window against the Wings.

He said: “All through training on Thursday we worked on getting the ball wide and getting crosses in.

“But there’s no point doing it on Thursday night if we’re not going to do it on a Saturday.

“We have been building steadily and in previous games we have looked decent. We have been working hard, getting the ball wide and putting crosses in and linking up well.

“I haven’t seen that at all in the last two games.”

Midfielder Craig Wilding felt City were not worthy of taking anything from the game.

He said: “Playing a team who are around us in the league, we let ourselves down. We struggled to create anything, we just a lacked a bit of impetus and a spark.

“We haven’t played well but we still had a couple of chances and we could have got an equaliser but I don’t think we deserved it.”
