MALVERN Town’s young guns suffered extra-time heartache when they crashed out 1-0 to Notts County in the first round of the FA Youth Cup.
Sven Goran Eriksson may not have been at the game but he would have witnessed a gutsy performance by Town, who were only beaten by a 98th minute strike from substitute Paul Lawless.
But Town gave County a run for their money with first-team player Mason Mansfield looking dangerous up front for the hosts.
The Langland Stadium side were also left to rue several missed chances in the first-half of normal time that they dominated.
Midfielder Craig Carter had a close-range shot saved after 15 minutes and two minutes later, Birch fired his shot over from 10 yards.
But Town’s best chance fell on 47 minutes when Joe Kings’ shot hit the post after being put clean through.
