PUT a top angler on a good peg and the result is a forgone conclusion.
This belief was borne out once again during the latest Brockamin open as carp expert Rob Wilson drew the fancied end peg 33 in the neck of the top pool to blitz the event with 88lbs 4oz.
Presenting his sweetcorn bait at a full 16 metres, Wilson netted around 20 of his favourite species before adding a further six fish from the margins late on.
Venue regular Chris Senter had to be content with the runner-up prize from his peg 31 next to the winner after netting fish to eight pounds on the pellet going 60-12.
Dan Coley (Mosella) took third place, thanks to a level 39-0 from peg 29 to beat Tony Witcher’s straight lead caught 35-12 from peg 24.
There will be another Brockamin open in two weeks.
Gary Brixton got the better of his older rivals by winning the first Portobello winter competition on Rushwick pool.
Offering pellet close in, the young star amassed a winning weight of carp and silvers going 23-10.
Relegated to second was Alan Tibbetts with a similar net taken on meat weighing 20-1.
Jim Daley claimed third with 14-10, while fourth was Ron Eagle with a silver fish catch of 7-5-8.
Continuing his good run on Barbourne AC events was Richard Hancocks who tamed poor conditions on the Cavalier section of the local canal for their end-of-season fur and feather contests.
High winds were a feature of the day, forcing most to adopt a short pole approach.
Hancocks offered his worm and caster bait at just four metres on his peg near the playing fields.
He was rewarded initially with a run of small perch before two good roach late in the day brought his catch up to a winning 3-6 total.
At the other end near the football ground, runner-up Terry Box adopted a similar approach to the winner and also found small perch which, along with a good chub in the dying minutes, lifted his weight to 2-6.
Third prize went to Dave Blackwell with 1-7 of small fish taken from his peg near the winner.
Carp in Cob House Fisheries’ Laugherne Island pool are rapidly putting on weight with Chris Bradney netting the biggest recorded so far — a fish of almost 16lbs.
But it was not enough for him to make the leaderboard with regular John Watson taking 100-9 to the scales from peg four on soft pellet presented shallow to win the Saturday open contest.
Dave Green came second, weighing 90-0 from peg 16 to beat Martin Guest’s 83-8.
The Wednesday open on the Laurel pool saw Scott Jones win with a pellet caught carp net of 79-5 off peg five.
The runner-up prize went to Mick Jones, weighing 35-3 from peg 20, while third was Alan Bount with 29-10.
