A DRAW on the lower church section on the Wye at Holme Lacey was necessary for Alan’s Tackle boss Dave Beresford to win this year’s coveted Alan Reynolds Memorial contest with the section providing the top three places.
Peg 15 near the salmon hut was where the winner found himself.
After taking half-a-dozen chub on the waggler and maggot early on, Beresford took the decision to change to the feeder and was rewarded with a bigger net of fish, ending the day with an excellent all chub catch of 62-8-0.
Downstream of the winner on peg 20 was local pole ace Alan Baldwin (Phoenix) on a straight waggler set-up which, along with caster and maggot bait, led to the downfall of 25 chub giving him the runner-up prize with 54-8-0.
James Wilson (St John’s) weighed in a waggler-caught all-chub net from the adjacent upstream peg 19, going 37-4-0 for third.
Best weight from the top bridge section was taken by Kempsey’s Alf Hand, who netted 180 dace on waggler and pole from peg nine for a fourth-placed 35-8-0.
Section winners: ‘A’ Steve Taylor 14-8-0; ‘B’ Dennis Evans 24-4-0; ‘C’ Geoff Tyler 24-0-0; ‘D’ Bill Hartland 0-8-0; ‘E’ Matt Hamilton 7-4-0; ‘F’ Nick Vaughan 2-12-0.
Barbourne AC held their annual ‘maggot only’ contest on their own pool at Cotheridge with winner Bob Griffiths taking 35-4-0 on the waggler from peg eight, consisting of carp to double figures along with a few silver fish.
Runner-up was Kevin Anderson’s 33-4-0 catch, which came off peg 25 and consisted of seven carp all caught at 10 metres. Third place went to son of the winner Lee Griffiths with 31-8-0.
This week the club are on the river Severn at Winterdyne.
Club star Colin Davis comfortably won the final Whitehall summer league match of the season on a frost-affected club pool with a meat-taken carp weight of 24-12-0 coming from permanent peg seven.
Some way back in second was Tom Mitchenhall with a level 13-0-0 caught on corn, and taking third was Mark Johnson weighing in 10-9-0 of carp and silvers.
Section winners: ‘A’ Dave Warren; ‘B’ Nigel Crane; ‘C’ Keith Holt.
End of season trophies — club champion: Nigel Crane; knock-out winner: Dave Warren; pairs winners: Colin Davis and Steve Mitchenhall. Former WDUAA match secretary Colin Bennett continued his excellent form at Moorlands Farm.
Bennett’s latest victory came during the Sunday open where he drew peg 13 on Meadow pool and used pellet feeder for an all-carp winning weight of 101-5-0. Runner-up was Bilston’s Colin Pace with 63-0-0 and third came Alan Gethen (Stevens Tackle) 56-8-0.
Wednesday Open: 1 K Sherriff 102-7-0; 2 P Foster 77-8-0.
Saturday Open: 1 M Henshall 81-6-0; 2 E Mills 67-7-0.
Cob House Fishery — Wednesday open (Laugherne Island): 1 S Jones 176-4-0; 2 M Smith 134-9-0; 3 R Swain 115-14-0.
Saturday open (Wyatt’s): 1 C Cameron 165-6-0; 2 C Jones 157-1-0; 3 D Boyer 102-3-0.
Prospects: All rivers should benefit from the mid-week rain particularly the river Wye which this Sunday hosts the sell out Wye Championships. With a number of local anglers making the trip to Hereford, all will be looking for a draw on the river’s huge chub and barbel shoals where feeder or waggler tactics should take massive catches.
