WE finally got the monkey off our back with the win at Essex Pirates and it is a huge relief to everyone at the club.
The improvements we have made over the past couple of weeks have finally come to fruition, but it is only one victory and we must build on it.
The cornerstone of the 78-71 win at Essex — our first of the season — was the adjustments we made at point guard.
As you know, I have been searching for a replacement for Anthony Martin without success.
Evaldas Zabas and Vidmantas Uzkuraitis have been playing out of position while I tried to find a new point guard.
At Essex, Chey Christie also shared some of those responsibilities. It worked too.
I told the guys before the match that I was looking to find a solution within our squad, but I knew that if it didn’t work then I would need to get someone else in.
Of course, it would be nice to have a specialist point guard, but, after the Essex game, I feel the issue isn’t as urgent as it was before.
To win in the BBL Cup means we have other avenues for success this season and a chance of winning a trophy.
We head to Everton Tigers tomorrow for an extremely tough match.
I picked them out as one of the teams to beat this season and, after losing twice on the road in their last couple of games, they will be looking to put that right in front of their own fans.
But we must try and build on our victory on the road in what will be a huge test for us.
Then on Saturday we face London Capital at the University of Worcester.
This is not the same London side who were getting beaten by 20 to 30 points every week last season — they are a much more competitive side now.
They beat Leicester Riders 85-82 last Sunday and we must use our own crowd to inspire us to victory.
I spoke last week about how video analysis is helping our game and we are looking to take it a step further.
Before, we used to have to rely on videos from other teams for our match preparation but now we have our own video analyst who comes to the games with us.
Also, we are now looking at videoing our training sessions. By this, we can have a better critique of our game.
Remember, we have only won one match and that is something we all desperately want to build on, starting tomorrow night.
