EVESHAM United earned an undeserved FA Trophy first qualifying round replay as goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan scored an equaliser deep into stoppage time against Windsor & Eton.
Still looking for their first home win of the season, the Robins looked far from confident against a side currently unbeaten in Zamaretto League South & West.
After the visitors had scored a 70th minute opener through Victor Osobu, United found a lifeline from an unlikely source as Vaughan came upfield for a free-kick deep into time added on. The kick, taken by Simon Fitter, was only half-cleared and Vaughan, lurking on the edge of the penalty area, hit a stunning strike to earn the replay on Tuesday night.
The first chance of the contest fell to the visitors but Jake Parsons’ shot was comfortably collected by Vaughan.
Play then switched to the other end where both of the Robins’ returnees were involved as Mark Hands’ cross was volleyed wide by Danny Lennon. Windsor should have taken the lead in the 15th minute as Andrew Fagan nodded down a corner to Osobu but he snatched at his shot and fired wildly over an empty goal.
Richard Ball fired in a vicious volley on 24 minutes that keeper Rob Bullivant could only parry away with no home player following in on the loose ball.
Osobu had another chance on the half hour but again he contrived to fire high over the bar.
The second-half continued as the first with United struggling to match the visitors as they confidently stroked the ball around and it was no surprise when the Royalists took the lead in the 70th minute.
Debutant Osobu received the ball midway inside the Evesham half and used his speed to great advantage as he jinked past a defender to slot an angled shot past Vaughan from the left-hand corner of the six-yard box.
United thought they had equalised in the 84th minute as substitute Jermaine Clarke’s flick-on found Lennon, who chipped the advancing Bullivant only to see a defender get back to hook the ball off the goal line.
