DARYL Mitchell is hoping he can use his experience of coming through the ranks at Worcestershire to help the side’s youngsters now that he has been appointed as vice-captain.

The 25-year-old was the first graduate of the County’s academy and has gone on to establish himself in Steve Rhodes’ team.

The Badsey-born all-rounder is relishing the role of helping Worcestershire rebuild the team following the departures of Steve Davies, Gareth Batty, Simon Jones and Stephen Moore.

“When I was growing up I was quite fortunate with the people I could turn to. There was Graeme Hick, Vikram Solanki, Ben Smith and Phil Jacques I could ask advice from,” Mitchell said.

“Now as vice-captain people will be turning to me and that is something that I’m looking forward to.

“I’m 25 now, and I have got nearly 50 first-class games under my belt, so with the team in transition I will be one of the more senior players and I have to take on a more senior role.”

Mitchell has already been touted as a future captain for the New Road side and that is something which appeals to the opener.

“That is something for the future - it’s a long way off. I’m really looking forward to working with Vik over the next few years,” he said.

“But of course, being a local lad becoming captain of Worcestershire in the future does appeal to me.”
