WORCESTER Wanderers maintained their fine early season form with a resounding 42-0 win over Old Coventrians at Weston’s Fields in Midlands Two West (South).

The hosts played fluid, open rugby at pace in the first-half, dominating territory and possession.

Old Covs conceded four first-half tries, with the opening two scores coming from Luke Denton, who showed good speed and determination, while Dave Merlin and Tom Mitchell, who had an excellent all round game at full-back, were also on the scoresheet.

Greg Fincher converted two of the tries together with a penalty on 20 minutes.

Old Covs rallied towards the end of the first period, putting Wanderers’ defence under a period of sustained pressure.

However, the home team held firm to maintain their clean sheet at the interval.

Injuries early in the second-half to Mike James and Denton led to James Price and Russ Marsland joining the fray.

Despite the reshuffle, Wanderers continued to hold the territorial advantage against a determined Old Covs team, who contested every ball.

With 20 minutes to go, Fincher left the field with a hamstring injury and Chris Griffiths, who had an outstanding game at blindside flanker, moved to centre.

Wanderers scored three further tries in the second-half from Sam Carter, Chris Jenkinson and Lee Watson, none of which were converted.
