THE Worcestershire Golf Club’s major match-play competition, The Meredith Cup, was concluded when Jim Daly defeated Andy Perkins five-and-four over 36 holes.

With both players having handicaps of 13 the match was played level and, while the morning round was even for nine holes, Daly played the back nine in 39 to his opponent’s 47, which enabled him to enjoy a five-hole lead at the half-way stage.

Both players were long off the tee and, apart from a missed opportunity on the second hole in the afternoon, Perkins was unable to shake off Daly’s firm grip.

With Daly out in 39 to Perkins’ 40 strokes, the turn was reached with Daly still five holes up.

He conceded the 12th hole after encountering a greenside bunker, but finished the match with a long drive and a fairway wood to within five yards of the pin on the top level of the 14th green.

This was impressive stuff which his worthy opponent, having missed his drive, could do little about but admire and shake hands.

The final of The Ledbury Cup foursomes match-play will be between Neil and Jason Allies, who defeated Martin Teale and Jim Pawson four-and-three, and Jamie Dunster and Nick Smith, who defeated Chris Hardy and Mel Stocker at the 19th hole.

This should produce a close final with all four players having low handicaps.
