WESTFIELDS went out of the FA Carlsberg Vase after a 1-0 home defeat to Stratford Town in a third round replay last night.

Fields, who did well to draw 1-1 at Stratford at the weekend, could not break down a well-organised defence in a game played at fast pace.

The all-important goal came in the 13th minute when Stratford’s top-scorer Jozsef Jakab tucked a 20-yard shot out of the reach of keeper Gareth Williams.

Fields created a few half-chances when Mark Davis twice back-headed at the near post from Jamie Edwards’ corners but no-one was on hand to tuck away the chances.

Defences were on top in the opening 45 minutes but, after the break, Davis lobbed the keeper but the ball went inches wide.

Substitute Jamie Upcott was not far away with another effort. Fields were thwarted by the big Stratford defence, who held firm to give them a vital passage on the road to Wembley.

Meanwhile, Bromyard Town got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory at physical Darlaston Town in the West Midlands League Premier Division.

The visitors started well but found themselves 1-0 down after 15 minutes against the run of play with a well-taken header from a corner. Bromyard still dominated and, in the 30th minute, Rob Woodward found Luke Towler, who crossed for Lee Thorp to volley in the equaliser.

After the break, Bromyard played the better football on a frosty pitch.

In the 88th minute, Towler was brought down in the box and the resulting penalty was smashed in by sub Andy Malcolm to seal Bromyard’s victory.
