STRUGGLING Pershore upset the odds by holding physical Newtown to a 1-1 draw in BodyKraft West Midlands Hockey League Division One.

In the opening exchanges, it was clear the hosts were more than a match for their opponents.

Ali Sanderson held the ball up well in attack and provided Pershore with an outlet they had been lacking.

It was no surprise when they took the lead mid-way through the first-half. Liam Ridings threaded a superb ball to Sanderson who beat his man, drew the keeper and calmly squared for Toby Whiting to find an empty net.

The goal sprang Newtown into life and they launched a sustained spell of pressure but Pershore defended gallantly.

Just before half-time, however, the match was all-square, courtesy of a well-worked free-hit move. Pershore heads did not drop as the second-half started when both teams pushed for a winner.

Pershore owed much to Russell Scudamore and the experienced Mike Handley.

Dave Hindle and Whiting showed skill and pace on the break, while Joe Taylor dazzled on the flank.

Pershore were unlucky not to take the lead when Sanderson was denied by a despairing defensive dive.
