WORCESTER City Women face the most important game of their season so far when they host league leaders Leamington Lions on Sunday (2pm).

The Bilford Road side continued their unbeaten record in West Midlands Division One South with a 3-0 victory at Birmingham Athletic last weekend.

Nicky Bond scored twice and Jayne Soffe once as Paul Hennessey’s second-placed team kept up the pressure on Leamington.

City are four points behind the leaders, having both played eight games, going into Sunday’s clash.

Captain Vicky Andrews said: “Leamington like to score but we don’t seem to concede so, if our defence and keeper can keep it tight, we have got every chance.”

Soffe’s free-kick put Worcester ahead against Birmingham but they were indebted to a fine save from Jodie Bennett for keeping Athletic out after the break.

Bond netted from the penalty spot 15 minutes from time and added her second in the closing stages.

Andrews added: “It was a great result because they are a good side.

“The penalty totally knocked Birmingham for six and, if it had come earlier, we could have got more goals.”

Worcester City Reserves head to Stourport Swifts on Sunday in the Kidderminster County Women’s League.
