PUTTING the ‘soul’ back into Worcester City is the chief aim of the group looking to win power at next week’s decisive annual general meeting.
The Shareholders Action Group (SAG) believe they have the ability to safeguard the future of the Blue Square South club, which they claim is in a “chaotic state,” by increasing revenue at St George’s Lane.
Plans include a refurbishment of the Legends Bar, review of the catering franchise, restoration of player sponsorship and a children’s area and tuck shop.
Derek Jones, one of the group’s five nominees for election to the club’s board at the November 28 meeting, has also personally guaranteed £25,000-a-year to the club from the Legends Bar.
The group also plans to form committees to look after different aspects of the club and review the constitution.
The manifesto, which comes in the wake of SAG’s proposal to build a new stadium on the Cinderella Sports Ground in St John’s, has been outlined in a letter to shareholders.
Barry Ward, Richard Bentley, Colin Layland, Martin Pinches and Jones are hoping to wrestle power from the current board.
The group successfully forced an extraordinary general meeting after gathering backing from more than 10 per cent of the shareholders.
The letter stated: “As the date for the proposed ground move is dependent on many unknown factors, the group intend to maximise the income producing opportunities at St George’s Lane.
“This will include a complete overhaul and refurbishment of the Legends Bar. The intention is to open only on a Friday night if viable, matchdays and for special functions.
“At present the bar runs at a loss but we believe this can quickly be turned around within a new environment that encourages supporters to drink in the bar, rather than the local public house, before matches and both players and supporters to mix after games.
“By opening up the whole room and demolishing the partition wall we can create a separate children’s area and tuck shop. We understand at other grounds where this is provided up to £200 per match can be taken.
“There will be regular meetings with supporters to update where we are.
“Overall, we believe our group of proposed directors have the necessary business and personal skills to rebuild the club from its current chaotic state. The main aim will be to put some ‘soul’ back into the club.”
