HEAVY overnight rain drastically re-duced catches for competitors in the latest round of the Worcester and Distict United Anglers Association Winter Lea-gue on the canal.
But the down-stream Blockhouse section held it’s own producing all the top individual catches.
First place overall was canal ace Mick Samson who put his mid-week practise session to good use by taking a creditable 5-12-7 winning net.
Drawn well away from the fancied reed- bed and into open water on permanent 225, the Greenman star started with worm and caster offered into the centre channel to net three roach early on.
A change to hempseed in the final half of the contest saw Samson put roach in the four to six ounce bracket into his net.
Nic Vaughan (N&C) was also drawn in the Blockhouse section, this time on peg 217 and he started with worm against the reeds to take a few roach and a hybrid before returning to the track to net more ‘redfins’ in his 5-4-0 runner-up net.
The final prize went to third-placed Gary Rowberry (Barnards Green) who, on peg 213, took five roach and two skimmers on worm and caster going 5-2-4.
Section winners were ‘A’: Alan Bald-win. ‘B’: Craig Lymer. ‘C’: Tim Biddle. ‘D’: Ivor Ballard.
Top team were N&C Match Group with 11 points followed by Greenman with 15 and Barnards Green third on 16.
After three rounds the league sees Spa Blue still in front with a reduced lead on 42 points with Greenman in second place and Barnards Green third with 49.
The next round is on the same venue in two week’s time.
The WDUAA river match at Pitchcroft left competitors wondering about the effects of last year’s floods when, on a perfect-looking but fast-flowing river, only one double figure catch was recorded.
Top man once again was Upton river expert Colin Harvey who drew opposite the boat and weighed in a winning weight of 10-6-0. This consisted of a two pounds chub, a bream and a few good sized roach, all falling to stick-float and maggot.
Way behind in second place came High-bury matchman Barry Cheese who total-led 5-14-0 of float-taken roach from the top of the bend.
Third place went to Dave Wright from peg one with 5-8-0, while fourth was a stick-float caught net of 4-9-0 by Steve Taylor on the ‘concrete’ peg.
Portobello AC’s latest contest on the match pool at Evesham’s Jubilee Fishery saw Lol Jameson come out on top with 36-9-0 of F1 hybrids, all caught on pole fished meat and corn.
Steve Dobbs needed just two hefty carp to take the runner-up prize with 22-5-0.
Small fish expert Ron Eagle finished third, weighing in an all-roach net caught on caster for 11-1-0.
Worcester still-water star Peter Col-drick landed 8-1-0 of F1’s to take fourth place.
Best youngster was the talented Gary Brixton junior weighing 5-5-0.
