WORCESTER City will need to clean up their act on the field if they are to earn a cut of £15,000 at the end of the season.
The Football Conference has launched a scheme to reward clubs for good disclipline to support the Football Associa-tion’s Respect programme.
Financial rewards are being made available to share be-tween clubs who demonstrate improvements in the attitude of their players, officials and fans with a total of £5,000 up for grabs in each of the three Blue Square divisions.
Known as the sportsmanship awards, clubs in Blue Square South and North started the season on 54 points and are docked one point for each booking and three for a red card. Teams with the most points remaining next April will receive a cut of the cash.
However, Richard Dryden’s side have already had 25 yellow cards and one sending off this season, a total of 28 points, so have just 26 left for their remaining 29 matches.
Conference chairman Brian Lee said: “The colours red and yellow are playing too great a part in modern football to the detriment of the game. We want to encourage sportsmanship in our leagues and see this initiative as a catalyst to do just that.
“We all have a responsibility to improve the status of our national game.” Martin James, director of sponsors Sports 360, added: “If, by offering up prize money, we can help remind and encourage clubs of the values and the ethos of what football is all about, then it is a most worthwhile sponsorship.”
Blue Square Premier teams began the campaign with 60 points because they play four more games. Kidderminster Harriers have so far picked up 14 cautions, leaving Mark Yates’ side with 46 points.
