NORTH Midlands Under 16s suffered the agony of conceding a last-minute try and losing 15-10 to Warwickshire in their opening county match of the season at Broadstreet RFC near Coventry.
North Midlands had opened a 10-3 lead at the interval with Jack Jones (King Edward VI, Five Ways and Greater Birmingham) scoring a try and his centre partner Alex Lane (Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School and Herefordshire) adding the conversion and a penalty.
But Warwickshire battled back to level the scores at 10-10 after the break and snatched the win with an unconverted try with almost the last play of the match.
North Midlands are next in action at this age group on Sunday, November 2, when they travel to Syston RFC near Leicester, for the first of two Super Sunday tournaments which will involve all six Midlands counties.
North Midlands will play East Midlands at Syston (1pm) and then host Leicestershire at Ledbury on November 16 (1pm) for the second Super Sunday event. The other games at Ledbury are Warwickshire v Stafforshire (11am) and East Midlands v Notts, Lincs and Derbyshire (3pm). Admission is free.
North Midlands complete their county programme with a game against Staffordshire at Bromsgrove on Thursday, November 27 (7.30pm).
