THE first clashes in the re-styled Worcester Table Tennis League Division One have thrown up interesting results.
Last year’s winners Rainbow were pushed all the way by Jostekeroge, for whom Chris Pearce was unbeaten.
Their other success was a hard-fought five-set win for Rob Sinderberry over Pete Griffiths but Rainbow triumphed 6-4.
Himbleton ‘C’ have had a tough start, losing 8-2 to Hartlebury Wanderers as Dave Griffiths and Brian Holyman were unbeaten.
They also fell 9-1 to YMCA Falcons with John Stalker and Ian Bell winning all three matches.
Falcons were less successful against Pavilion Players, going down 6-4 despite two good wins for Dave Elliott. As so often, Stephane Bonnafous was unstoppable.
Himbleton ‘A’ lost their first encounter 7-3 at Cripplegate Guild.
John Rowe won his three for the visitors but that was the limit of their success.
Nemesis made a good start in Division Two with a comfortable 8-2 win over new team YMCA Kites.
In his comeback from injury, Dave Williams won two games for Kites but was beaten by Richard Cullis in a deciding set.
Cullis was unbeaten for Nemesis, while Don James and Ray Davies each took two games and combined to triumph in the doubles.
Nemesis came away from WGCC with a 7-3 win as Cullis and Davies each won three singles and Bill Smith beat Paddy Mullen.
WGCC’S Dave Stevens and Brian Webb both accounted for Smith and were successful in the doubles.
Kites secured their first win in beating visiting Strensham 7-3. Williams was unbeaten, recovering to beat Roger Davies in the final set.
Ray Griffiths also won his three games for the Kites and added the doubles with Ewan Gear.
YMCA Enigma fielded only two players at home to Broadheath Belters and paid the penalty, going down 1-9.
Their lone win came from John Cawthra, while Pete Stevens and Ken Hipwell each won two games for Belters.
